In a moment, we’ll enter the cellblocks, but our tour begins here in this gravel covered area.

I’m actor and director, Steve Buscemi. I'll be one of your guides as you visit the prison. You'll also hear from former inmates, guards and the people who have studied and preserved this historic building. These are their real voices.

ANONYMOUS PRISONER 5:
I was scared to death. You didn’t know what was going to happen.

RICHARD GRIFFIN, GUARD:
Well, I used to tell ‘em outright, you try to hurt me, I’m gonna try to kill you. Tit for tat, pal.

JESSE DIGUGLIELMO, PRISONER:
If you look at the walls outside, they were like 25, 30 feet in the air. But on the inside, they were like 60 or 70 feet in the air.

NORMAN JOHNSTON, SOCIOLOGIST:
Eastern State is without a doubt the most influential prison that was ever built.

STEVE BUSCEMI:
Before we enter the cellblocks, follow the road to the raised concrete surface facing the outside wall.

I first came to Eastern State in 1999. I was scouting a film location, and was amazed to find this magnificent ruin—still standing in the middle of a modern city.

You should now be on the raised concrete surface alongside the road. You're standing inside the world’s first true penitentiary, a building designed to inspire penitence—or true regret—in the hearts of criminals. The architects here believed that all human beings, regardless of their behavior, have good in their hearts.

They believed Eastern State Penitentiary would inspire a new generation of prisons, worldwide, built on this optimism and faith in the human character. On the inside, Eastern State was progressive, even visionary.

But on the outside? This illustration shows Eastern State, on its isolated hilltop, a year after it opened. Look at the walls. They're 30-feet tall— with an additional 10 feet below ground level. Look at the battlements across the roofline, the towers. On the outside this building is a castle, a fortress, a dungeon.

STEVE BUSCEMI:
Standing isolated on a lonely hilltop, some mile and a half outside the early City of Philadelphia, this massive building was designed to dominate the landscape and imply a harsh physical threat to lawbreakers in the city below.

But the prison’s Gothic Revival architecture is mostly for show. The battlements across the top of the administration building are fake— they’re only ankle-high—and wouldn’t provide much protection in battle. And you may have noticed tall arrow slit windows lining the front wall as you approached the prison today, the type of windows seen in castles. Well, they’re fake too. You’re now looking at that huge wall from the inside, and you can see that those window frames don’t penetrate this solid, featureless wall.

Step down from the raised concrete surface, and follow the roadway around the corner to the left.

Si miras los muros del exterior, tienen aproximadamente entre 8 y 10 metros de altura. Pero en el interior tienen una altura de entre 20 y 23 metros.

NORMAN JOHNSTON:
Eastern State es, sin duda alguna, la prisión más influyente que se haya construido jamás.

STEVE BUSCEMI:
Antes de entrar en los bloques de celdas, siga la carretera y pase la entrada a la izquierda, hasta llegar a la superficie de hormigón elevada frente al muro exterior. Tómese su tiempo, y cuando llegue allí permanezca de pie sobre esa superficie elevada de cara al edificio de administración - es la estructura grande tipo castillo.

Vine por primera vez a Eastern State en 1999. Estaba buscando la localización para una película y me impresionaron estas magníficas ruinas – que siguen en pie en medio de una ciudad moderna. Se las mostraré mientras las visita durante los próximos 40 minutos aproximadamente. Puede parar el audio en cualquier momento pulsando el botón cuadrado amarillo “PAUSE”.

Usted debe estar ya sobre la superficie elevada de hormigón a lo largo de la carretera. Está en el interior de la primera penitenciaría auténtica del mundo, un edificio diseñado para inspirar penitencia, o auténtico arrepentimiento, en los corazones de los criminales. Los arquitectos que diseñaron este edificio creían que todos los seres humanos, independientemente de su comportamiento, tenían el bien en sus corazones. Si se les daba el entorno adecuado, incluso los criminales más endurecidos examinarían sus almas y se reformarían.

Creían que la prisión de Eastern State inspiraría una nueva generación de prisiones, en todo el mundo, construidas con este optimismo y fe en la naturaleza humana. En el interior, Eastern State era progresista, incluso visionaria.

¿Y en el exterior? Esta ilustración muestra la Eastern State, en la cima de una colina, un año después de su apertura. Mire los muros. Tienen 10 metros de altura, con 3 metros más por debajo del nivel del terreno. Mire las almenas en la línea del tejado, las torres. Desde el exterior, este edificio es un castillo, una fortaleza, una mazmorra.

STEVE BUSCEMI:
Erigida aislada en una colina solitaria, a algo más de dos kilómetros de lo que era la ciudad de Filadelfia, este edificio masivo estaba diseñado para dominar el paisaje e imponer una dura amenaza física a los delincuentes de la ciudad que se encontraba más abajo.

Pero esa especie de reinstauración del gótico de la prisión es sólo una apariencia. Las almenas de la parte superior del edificio de administración son falsas - sólo tienen la altura de un tobillo y no proporcionarían mucha protección en una batalla. Y tal vez usted haya observado altas ventanas hendidas de las que había en los castillos para lanzar flechas a lo largo del muro cuando se ha acercado hoy a la prisión. Pues son falsas también. Ahora está mirando a ese enorme muro desde el interior, y verá que esas ventanas no penetran en este muro sólido y monótono.

Baje de la superficie de hormigón elevada, y siga el camino bordeando la esquina hacia la izquierda.
