Eastern State Penitentiary’s Finding Justice programs invite visitors to explore how expression—through words, art, and music—has always been a natural and essential human right, even within spaces of confinement.
Through the self-guided tour, visitors trace the fight for civil rights as it reached Eastern State, encountering the voices of incarcerated people whose writings and actions became part of the broader movement for equality.
In the video installation, Voices of Liberation, hear from civil rights leaders who spoke and wrote from behind bars, using their voices to challenge oppression and inspire collective change.
Finally, the Chaplain’s Office Murals and Music Mini Tours highlights how creative expression—through visual art and sound—has long offered both reflection and resistance within the prison walls.
Together, these programs affirm that the impulse to create, to communicate, and to seek justice is universal—a fundamental right that endures, even in the most restrictive circumstances.
