Join us for the public opening of Land of the Free by Cody Stuhltrager, the inaugural artist-in-residence for ReVision: Art and Justice. Through a large-scale mural and gallery wall of objects, Land of the Free asks us to examine the persistent institution of prison labor and its connection to the 13th Amendment, which allows involuntary servitude as punishment for a crime, and its impact on incarcerated individuals whose labor goes largely unrecognized.

ReVision: Art & Justice is a multi-year artist residency and exhibition series that centers original work by justice-impacted artists whose lived experiences inform their creative practice. Through site-specific commissions, exhibitions, and public programs, ReVision amplifies artists' voices while creating opportunities for dialogue, reflection, and connection.

ReVision: Art and Justice has been supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.

About the Panelists:

We strive to make the penitentiary and our site, programs, and exhibits accessible to all visitors. Click here to learn more about accessibility and accommodations at ESPHS.

Winter Festival of Independence and Natural Rights

Sunday, November 01 - Thursday, December 31, 2026
All Day

Included with admission.

Our nation’s founders, and the founders of Eastern State Penitentiary, asserted through documents like the Declaration of Independence that every person had natural-born rights like life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. But what does that look like—and are those rights truly protected—within America’s criminal justice system. Reflect on this pressing question by taking part in special, all-ages programming included with historic site admission.
