Reflect on Eastern State Penitentiary’s legacy as the birthplace of solitary confinement in America and examine its use in prisons today. Join guided tours exploring the prison’s early history, then engage with the Journey to Justice Bus tour, brought to you by the Unlock the Box Campaign and Look2Justice, a mobile museum that blends art, public education, and powerful firsthand stories of solitary confinement, past and present.

  • The mobile museum is located on Fairmount Avenue, open to the public from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm each day. Free.
  • The Roots and Realities public tour and discussion starts at 11:00 am each day, inside Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site, included with standard admission.

About the Journey to Justice Bus Tour:
Step inside the skoolie (a repurposed school bus) designed as an interactive advocacy hub featuring a mobile library, immersive exhibits, and a life-sized solitary cell. Dive into the dialogue sparked by the forthcoming book, Ending Isolation (written by directly impacted people and experts) and join engaging events nearby, all led by people directly impacted by solitary confinement. The tour includes 18 cities this fall, including the Philadelphia stop here at Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site from October 25 to 26. For more information, visit journeytojusticetour.com.

About the Panelists:

We strive to make the penitentiary and our site, programs, and exhibits accessible to all visitors. Click here to learn more about accessibility and accommodations at ESPHS.
