As Philadelphia prepares to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence, Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site seeks to honor the city’s foundational role in shaping the nation by launching A Time for Liberty: Our Shared History, Our Shared Future. This inclusive, public programming initiative will engage diverse audiences in exploring the evolving meanings of liberty, freedom, and justice, past, present, and future. Rooted in both Philadelphia’s unique history and Eastern State’s legacy as America’s first penitentiary, the project will celebrate the full breadth of civic experiences, promote civic dialogue, and inspire renewed commitment to democracy over the next 250 years.
More details will be announced soon.
We strive to make the penitentiary and our site, programs, and exhibits accessible to all visitors. Click here to learn more about accessibility and accommodations at ESPHS.
