Women's History Month at ESPHS
Join us at Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site (ESPHS) this Women’s History Month (March 1 – March 31) as we bring to light the stories and experiences of incarcerated women, past and present, offering a deeper understanding of their role in the history of the carceral system.
Today, women make up approximately 10% of the total incarcerated population in the United States, representing one of the fastest-growing demographics within the prison system. However, their experiences have historically been neglected. During its operation, women constituted 2% of Eastern State Penitentiary’s population, and their experiences were often overlooked or disregarded by officials.
