Examining the challenges and contradictions of the First Amendment within U.S. prisons, this program will explore the ways Prison Radio provides a platform for incarcerated individuals to share their stories, ideas, and experiences.

In this discussion, we will explore the First Amendment and its application within the context of the U.S. prison system. This program will delve into how the rights to free speech and freedom of the press are both exercised and challenged behind bars, and how Prison Radio’s work amplifies the voices of incarcerated people who are often denied these fundamental rights. By examining the intersection of the First Amendment and mass incarceration, we’ll discuss how censorship, media access, and the right to speak out impact incarcerated people and their ability to engage in public discourse. Join us for this thought-provoking conversation, which highlights the ongoing struggle for freedom of expression and its vital role in challenging injustice.

Justice 101 is a discussion series examining the history of the justice system in America, from its founding to today, and the impact it has on society, citizens, and the world. Justice 101 programs are free and take place monthly. You can join us live at the times listed, or watch the discussions back anytime on YouTube. Justice 101 is designed for learners of all ages.
