Join us as we come together to commemorate Juneteenth, honoring the realized freedom and the struggle of the once enslaved Africans in America. Featuring a live performance of "Unshackled" by The Black Breath Collective, family-friendly storytelling by Thembi Palmer, and a panel discussion.
- 10:30 am: Storytime. Children's stories centering on the history of Juneteenth and celebrating resistance, read by local storyteller Thembi Palmer. Geared toward ages 5 to 12, but all ages are welcome.
- 11:30 am: Choir Performance #1. The Black Breath Collective performs "Unshackled," a 45-minute original work.
- 12:30 pm: Panel Discussion. Local scholars discuss the history of Juneteenth. Featuring Ismael Jimenez, Director of Social Studies Curriculum at the School District of Philadelphia, and Michael Coard, attorney, radio host, and newspaper columnist. Moderated by Lauren Zalut, ESPHS Director of Education and Tour Programs.
