Education Manager

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site (ESPHS) seeks an outgoing, engaging, and creative leader to oversee education programs that take place during Halloween Nights.

This position will directly oversee guide-led flashlight tours, audio tour, the operation of the Fair Chance Beer Garden, managing, motivating and making schedules for two assistant managers and a team of Educators, and overseeing the set up and break down of the spaces used for these programs. The Manager will sometimes lead behind-the-scenes tours themselves.

Responsibilities:

Managing a Team & Displaying Leadership:

  • Act as the main point of contact for all employees on the Halloween Nights Education team.
  • Participate in comprehensive Manager Training sessions from August 23-25 to refine leadership skills and become familiar with organizational protocols.
  • Delegate fitting tasks to the Assistant Department Managers (ADM) as necessary.
  • Prepare the ADM to competently step into either Department Manager (DM) roles during periods of DM absence, providing comprehensive guidance and mentorship to facilitate a smooth transition.


Team Management & Administrative Oversight:

  • Attend some of the Education auditions and provide feedback about potential candidates.
  • Create and maintain employee schedules successfully and ensure all positions are filled each show night.
  • Review and approve employee time records and hours every night utilizing the Paycom platform, maintaining meticulous accuracy and adherence to established payroll protocols.
  • Monitor staff punctuality and adherence to designated arrival and departure times, promptly addressing any deviations from schedules.
  • Exercise sound judgment and adherence to company policies in handling disciplinary matters and providing constructive feedback to employees, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute actively to staff training initiatives, leveraging expertise to facilitate professional development and enhance team competencies.
  • Maintain a vigilant managerial presence in the Education staff spaces, overseeing operations to ensure compliance with safety regulations and organizational standards.
  • Prioritize staff well-being by ensuring provision of adequate breaks and fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment conducive to employee satisfaction and productivity.


Operations and Programming Support:

  • Collaborate closely with Director of Education and Tour Programs to ensure alignment with mission and programming goals of the historic site.
  • Participate in program development and coordinate with programming partners as needed.
  • Collaborate closely with the Titan Manager to optimize staffing allocations and address any staffing deficiencies, ensuring seamless event operation.
  • Maintain open channels of communication with staff through pre and post-show meetings, as well as regular email or text correspondence, facilitating alignment and transparency.
  • Uphold stringent safety protocols and meticulously ensure the proper securing of locked spaces before public access, mitigating potential risks and liabilities.
  • Raise concerns and provide feedback to the General Manager and Senior Team during nightly manager meetings.


End of Season Responsibilities:

  • Clean, organize and inventory all equipment, uniforms and all other items related to the event for storage for the next year.
  • Provide a performance summary for each employee to be kept on file for future reference.
  • Attends wrap-up meeting and provide organized and constructive feedback


General Responsibilities:

  • Assist in training new staff and serve as a role model for all staff members.

  • Ensure adherence to "Leave No Trace Standards" on the historic site.


Qualifications

Required Skills/Abilities:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in History, Education, or related field preferred.
  • Proven experience in education, museum education, public history, or a related role.
  • A leader who has supervisory and management experience.


Physical Requirements:

  • Halloween Nights is a rain or shine event, and this position operates predominantly outdoors.
  • Must be comfortable working in a dark spaces.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to walk all aspects of the 10-acre site each night for the duration of show.
  • Ability to work in space where temperatures may vary to cold and hot.
  • Able to lift items up to 30 pounds.
  • Able to move through crowded public spaces easily.


Hours, Salary, & Benefits 

  • The position begins immediately and ends in November 2024.
  • Pay rate is $21.00/hour.
  • Weekend and evening work is required; at times work can go late into the night.
