The workshop will include a topic talk centered around the persistence of forced labor in prisons and presented by Jennifer Turner, a Human Rights Researcher with the American Civil Liberties Union. Participants will then join in on an activity and a classroom lesson discussion led by Ms. Danika Nieves, a Philadelphia educator.

All Teachback participants will receive copies of the teaching materials developed by peer educators who participated in Eastern State's Summer Teacher Institute. Pennsylvania-based teachers will also receive Act 48 credit.


Jennifer Turner smiles at the camera. Jennifer Turner (she/her) is the human rights researcher in the ACLU’s Human Rights Program. She conducts documentation research and advocacy on human rights violations in the United States. She is the author of numerous ACLU reports, including A Living Death, on life without parole sentences for nonviolent offenses; Island of Impunity, which documents police brutality and violence in Puerto Rico; and Blocking Faith, Freezing Charity, on how terrorism financing policies undermine Muslims’ religious freedom and charitable giving.

Danika Nieves smiles at the camera. Danika Nieves (she/her) is a Social Studies Learning Support teacher at Roxborough High School.  She is passionate about learning alongside her students, especially through first-hand experiences, and nurturing critical thinking skills wherever possible.  Outside of school, she loves animals and traveling the world.
