Al Capone

Alfonse “Scarface” Capone got his first taste of prison life in Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary. He served eight months in 1929-1930 for carrying a concealed, unlicensed .38 caliber revolver. This mug has a photo of Capone’s mug shot.

Willie Sutton

“Slick” Willie Sutton was a famous bank robber serving time in Eastern State Penitentiary in the 1930s and 1940s. He joined eleven other inmates in a doomed tunnel escape from Cellblock 7 in 1945. He was recaptured within minutes. The photo on this mug was taken shortly after Sutton was recaptured. He is still covered in mud.

Pep

Pep, “The Cat-Murdering Dog” was a black Labrador Retriever admitted to Eastern State Penitentiary on August 12, 1924. Prison folklore tells us that Pennsylvania Governor Gifford Pinchot sentenced Pep to serve life without parole at Eastern for killing his wife’s cherished cat. This mug has a mug shot of Eastern State’s most unique inmate.

In the early 1800s, prisoners at Eastern State Penitentiary wore hoods whenever they were outside cells. The hoods minimized human contact. This mug has a photo of a hooded inmate from Eastern State’s early years as a solitary confinement prison.
